The story of Teri Meri Kahaani is about Rawan (Tanushree Dutta), who runs an NGO to help children with cancer in India. She has a sister named Nisa (Kajol), who is married to the local politician, Aman (Divya Dutta). One day when Nisa goes to visit her sister, Rawan suddenly dies in a car accident. Then Nisa falls into depression and does not believe that they will ever see each other again. However, when Rawan finds herself in the after-life she finds that Nisa cannot see her. As a ghost, she finds that she can only help people that are in danger or need her help. That is when she finds out that someone is hiding information about the political corruption her sister is involved in. Rawan manages to investigate this person and finds out his evil intentions to take over their home town for his own personal gain. It's up to Rawan to reach out to her sister and save their home.
